I have always wondered what this was used for.

Especially since they used to come with those sewing kits you received at hotels (many many moons ago!)

I have been living under a rock because I only recently learned how to use this to thread needles with

Stick the thin wire into the eye of the needle, put your thread in between the thin wire "eye", pull on the gadget and it threads the needle!
